The shocking story of Larry Mead received very little attention from classical musicians when it broke in May of 2006. It was a missed opportunity to address a difficult problem:
Classical recordings can facilitate the peddling of child pornography.
Mr. Mead was an avid fan of classical music. He used file-sharing networks to download the latest recordings, but one of the files he downloaded turned out to be child pornography disguised as classical music!
The Cereal List is horrified to learn that perverts have taken advantage of classical music’s innocent, young recording artists, but we must ask ourselves: Why do classical record labels insist on releasing CDs that feature attractive young artists, provocative photographs, and suggestive album titles? If labels employ these titillating promotional techniques to sell CDs, should we be surprised when listeners turn into sex offenders?
I think you’re missing the point here. It’s not the record covers that are dangerous it’s that straigt-up porn is being misrepresented on file-sharing networks. But that’s always been the case, even in the days of bbs. And it doesn’t only occur with classical music.
Anyway, I don’t see how just being exposed to illegal porn turns you into a sex offender.
Ah, yes, everything was okay until he became ‘addicted’ to it. Wow, is everything a friggin’ addiction in this country, except good taste?
I don’t think it’s beyond the realm of possibility though, especially when there are artists who are blatantly flaunting their sexuality. I’m thinking particularly of the young Asian cellist Tina Guo, whose “Queen Bee” music video features her topless: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XeMbXid9iqk
So am I addicted to porn now? Because I’ve watched that Tina Guo video about 50 times already. She’s freaking hot!
It’s not porn, it’s art. And if you can’t tell the difference between the two, I wish you the best of luck in life. <3
